There have been a few discussions in our house lately. They have involved the Tooth Fairy and Santa. Serious stuff, I know.
Because Ethan is 11, I have been asking him what he thinks about these"people." I finally got out of him that none of his friends believe and he tells them that he doesn't because he doesn't want to be the only one that still does. I asked him what he thinks will happen if he doesn't believe, or how MUCH he really believed. He kept saying, "I don't know." So I finally asked him if he thought something would change if he didn't. He answered that he thought he wouldn't get as many presents if he said he didn't believe. I looked at him, asked him with a serious tone and an eyebrow raised, "Do you really believe there is a little fairy that goes into your room at night looking for teeth, or a guy that goes all over the world and hands out toys?" He just giggled and said, "I guess not." I assured him he would still get the same amount of presents (especially because Santa doesn't really give them all that much.) He then just giggled more!
Natalie has been questioning how real the Tooth Fairy and Santa are for over a year now. Last year she asked over and over and I would ask her what she believed. The same night I got out of Ethan that he didn't believe in Santa anymore, Natalie asked me to tell he the truth about the Tooth Fairy. I gave in and told her. She was a bit upset telling me that the next time she looses a tooth she's just going to hand it to me because there is no Tooth Fairy. I told her that if she wants her dollar and prize she better put it under her pillow because getting a surprise in the morning is half the fun! After a while she felt better and said that it was fun to wake up to a surprise.
A couple days later we got a Target advertisement in the mail full of Christmas toy ideas. I've been letting the kids look at these and circle things they might like. After letting Nat take it to her room, she came back down with it and said, "Mom, you're Santa aren't you?" I asked her why she thought that. Her reply was a simple, "Because this has 'stocking stuffers' for sale, and why would someone need stocking stuffers if there was a Santa?!"
She figured it out from a Target ad. Fabulous.
Again, she was a bit upset, but I assured her that Christmas won't change! I told both them that we would still go see Santa, and do all the fun traditions we do every year.
I asked Nat not to tell her friends, because I'm not sure who still/doesn't believe. On Thursday Nikole came over because Fonda had to work late for a base exercise. I was still at school when I got a text from Roby saying Nat told Nikole. Ugh I called Fonda to let her know before she came over in case Nikole freaked out. Fonda just laughed and said that Natalie was a smart cookie figuring it out from an advertisement!
I knew this would happen sooner rather than later, I just hope their excitement isn't any less than previous years!!!

Knowing how sweet and appricative your kids are I do not see thier excitement dwindling at all. They will still enjoy everything they get and be happy you took the time and effort. Hell maybe they'll like it even more cause it came from YOU!
