An Update Of Sorts

Last night I applied to the University of Missouri-Kansas City (aka UMKC by locals). They have a bachelors degree completion for dental hygiene. It is 99% online, only having three campus visits (we are about 3 hours away). I want my bachelors for several reasons (I'd like to teach someday and it will give me more job opportunities), so I thought it would be best to start next fall. I'll be working part/full time and taking classes part time. It will be busy, but life is always busy!

We rotated our "off-site" locations today. My new one is called Practice Model. We stay at Creighton Dental school, but are there to help dental students with more in depth cleanings they may have. We can talk to them about their methods or show them. If there aren't enough people doing this, we are then sent to watch various dental procedures. One girl went upstairs to the pediatric area to watch a four year old get a filling. Two helped a dental student with their periodontal debridements (cleanings). Another girl and I were able to go into the oral surgery are.

It was FABULOUS!

We got to watch an implant being placed. I was amazed at how quickly it was done considering what it is, how expensive it is, and how accurate the placement needs to be. After that twenty minutes, we went and watched a full mouth extraction (they took out ALL the teeth a woman had left). She had a few missing teeth, but the amount of bone loss made it pretty necessary. She had IV sedation and tons of pain control, but was so nervous she would freak out when they would even touch her lip with their finger. After about five teeth I decided I could help by holding her hand (down) instead of just standing there (she kept trying to reach up and grab at the dental students or the table). This seemed to help, for a few minutes anyway. They ended up having a doctor give her a general anesthesia medication, that lasts 3-5 minutes, over and over, to help her get through it.

I know to most of you this sounds ridiculously disgusting, but I am extremely fascinated by it all! The technology involved in implants, and what an implant can do for people is really cool. The guy was smiling and excited the whole time! I know the extractions sound painful, but when she gets her dentures in she will be able to smile and chew again (I don't want anyone to get dentures, but she was at the point that almost all her teeth wiggled when touched). For me, it was a cool way to spend the afternoon!

When I got home, I made dinner, took Nat to girl scouts, came home and worked on a Native American project that needed to be done by tomorrow. She didn't get to bed until almost 10:00. This is TWO hours past her bedtime. I really hope she has a decent day tomorrow!

I just realized the other night that Natalie hasn't been giving me many papers from school. Especially tests. I asked her where her spelling tests were because she hasn't brought more than two home all year. She said that she isn't bringing them home because she's getting bad grades and she's embarrassed. I asked her why she's getting bad grades and she said, "Because I'm not studying them." haha I liked that answer! I reminded her that the only way to do well on something you struggle with is to practice over and over...I also reminded her that if she hides things and continues to not bring her school work home she will get grounded. She practiced today after school! :-)

An update on Roby and Ethan? They are Roby and Ethan! Roby busy with work all the time. Hockey starts soon! I'm making him a mouth-guard in my biomaterials class. Ethan's bummed that its getting colder and he can't ride his skateboard as much!

198 days until I graduate!
