Reading

Natalie has been going to an extra reading lab at school for a week or two now. I'm not exactly sure what they do there...I'm assuming they read! :-) To help them more at home, they bring home a skill appropriate book every day that they are supposed to read to three people. This doesn't sound so bad, but when it takes her 15-20 minutes each time, it is quite time consuming! She also has other reading assignments, spelling, vocabulary, and math that she needs to work on most/every night. Last night she read her book to me, then Roby, then Maggie because Ethan was busy. Maggie was fine with the extra cuddle time!!!

Tonight we only had time to read her book twice, and this pushed her bedtime back an extra 20 minutes. She was a little upset that she wouldn't be able to get a prize if she didn't read the new book three times every night. To be honest, I've been a bit frustrated with it as well. We read with her, but 45-60 minutes a night just for this is a lot! I wrote a note to the reading lab teacher asking if there was something else we could do...because I certainly don't have the time to make sure this gets done by the time I get home from school!!! (Especially when Roby is going to be on alert so much coming up!) We'll see what happens!

I do have to say though, that reading so much has booster her confidence! Her speed and sounding out of words is slightly improving already. I think her issues have more to do with confidence that she can do it, more so than actually being able to do it. ;-) Doesn't sound like anyone else...does it???

Confidence, that is a hard one to instill in our children and even ourselves. I am happy to hear that she is doing better. Qtip has improved a lot with Sylvan but it seems will be going into a daily reading program at school too. Dude what he heck do they want from these kids anyway, they are only in 2nd grade! Good luck with the reading, 3 times seems ridiculous to me.
