Dog(S)

I've actually been a little embarrassed to write this blog...so it has taken me over a week to do it.

Some of you probably remember that a year ago (almost to the day now that I look back) we tried to get a second dog--an eleven month old lab mix. To be a companion for Max (I think this will be important when I have to work full time). We had been talking about it for almost a year before that.

You may also remember that it didn't work out. After she settled into our house she became very dominant over Max, had no desire to learn (although I tried several methods), would go to the bathroom in the house even if I took her out ever 30 minutes, and didn't seem to enjoy affection from any of us...especially the kids. I didn't want to be a person that got a dog, decided I didn't want it, so got rid of it. I don't feel like that's how it went. I really did give it a lot of effort--several months worth--but it just wasn't the right fit for our family. She did find another home, and I hope she is still there!

In recent months I had been looking once again to get that second dog. I didn't think we could handle another large dog in our small home, so I had been looking at smaller to medium sized dogs. Roby isn't keen on small dogs, but I found a breed that has a lot of personality and thought would get along great with Max. Not to mention a PUPPY so Max would remain the "top dog" and the puppy would learn its place in the family (pack).

Meet Maggie.

Maggie is a pug that we got nine days ago. She is a small pup, about 3 1/2 pounds, and is now 12 weeks old. This is her on the car ride home.

This is the first time the kids saw Maggie! She was a bit nervous around Max (the biggest dog she'd ever seen!), so was hiding by Ethan.

Max a few hours after we brought her home. He was tired from all the playing!

This is the second day she was home. Isn't it cute?! She's pretty brave for a little thing!

Max was learning to be gentle.

You talking to me???
(She'll get used to me with a camera up to my face pretty quickly!)
Max checking out the camera.

Natalie wanted to take a picture of her to school (because dogs are not allowed on school property.)

So did Ethan!

As of today, Max seems content with Maggie. Inviting her to play pretty much constantly. She adores him! When she tried to cuddle with him just three days after we got her, he wasn't sure what to do!

He is becoming more comfortable...although at times still unsure. I took this picture just two nights ago. She fell asleep, and Max was relaxed (but he didn't fall asleep).
This is Max and Maggie's first encounter in the backyard. Max was very excited to have someone to play with. Maggie was a bit shocked to see a dog so big!

Playing in the house a few minutes later.

A beautiful post. I was more interested in the two dogs and how one reacted to the other than anything else. I did read and watched both videos and wished they were a lot longer. Being friends is not so hard in the animals world we are part of but human beings can't seem to get along like dogs or cats or horses or cows.

Max is a doll. Anybody cold love that dog. He seems to have the patience of Job and the little dog is cute as a button.

She is so little and so damn cute! This makes me want a puppy. Small dogs are cute and seem so much easier to care for...no Im not that naive. I know hence the reason we are not there yet and may never be.

Your new dog is so adorable! I think Max will like it better now that he doesn't have a bigger dog to compete against. They look to cute together and watching them play is adorable.
