I called Haley yesterday morning at 5am before I started getting ready for school. I was able to talk to her for a good half hour. She is doing a little better. Cried a lot, but not the whole time. She told me what really happened and what all has gone on the last couple days. She said the place they were having the conference was just two blocks away from their hotel, so they saw no reason to waste the gas with a car. Her friend and a gal were going to the hotel to get a sweatshirt or something. Without warning, or exchange of a single word, a man shot her friend. He then shot at the girl as she was running away. The gal said she knew instantly that he wouldn't make it. Haley was just a block away and flipped when the gal came running back. Haley tried to run to him, but all the Peace Corps Volunteers were pushed onto buses and forced to leave.
On Sunday the girl with him was forced, by the police there, to reenact what happened three times. What she did, what Haley's friend did, and what the shooter did. They also had a funeral there. Haley said all funerals there are held under tents that look like circus tents. She said she will never look at a circus the same way. I don't blame her. Once the funeral part was done, they told stories and laughed about their memories.
When I talked to her yesterday she said someone was at her village getting some of her belongings because she had to get interviewed before flying to Washington DC today. They are flying Haley, the girl that was with him, and three of his other really close friends for counseling. They can stay there up to 45 days before deciding if they want to return to their posts or go home. I hope she will feel safe and strong enough to go back because she has wanted this for so long, but no one can blame her if she goes home. She said she wasn't able to eat without throwing up and had only slept a handful of hours.
I got up at 1am to call her this morning. I wanted to talk to her again before she flew out. I'm not sure why, I just want my friend to feel better I guess. She had eaten half an omelet and took a sleeping pill last night to get some sleep. She should be in the air now on her way to D.C.
Sorry for the not-so-happy posts. I never met her friend, but this is live changing event in Haley's life and she means a lot to me.

Wow! Its a very scary and sad situation. I hope she is okay in the end. I hope the counseling helps and she does finish her life dream.
