Family Room -- Check!

The process of getting a room "done" is odd. It always seems more scattered and messy before it looks better! Before starting on the family room, I had started taking boxes out of the garage to put them in the house. I put a bunch of boxes in the family room to get sorted into other rooms, to go in the family room, or get moved down to the basement.

This picture was actually taken after I moved most of those boxes out of the room! There were at least ten more in there!

One of our big questions during the move, was where to put the dogs. Not where they would be in our house...but where their crates would go. Max doesn't really need his, but its good for him to have it. He goes in it when he's needing some quiet time, needs to get away from Maggie, or when we have company over. We got Maggie a waaaay too big one so that when I'm gone all day she has more space. If need be, she can relieve herself on one side and not have to lay in it. I'm not encouraging her to do this, and she has only done it a couple times, but its better than having her in a tiny crate for hours and hours while I'm at school. Putting them in the corner, on the far side of the love seat, makes me happy! They are out of the way, and close to each other...which I think makes Maggie happy! At our other house, the only "dog free" area was our bed. Just a couple months before we moved, our whole room became dog free as well. When we moved, we decided that there was no reason for the dogs to go upstairs. The upstairs has the bedrooms and bathrooms only, so the only time they would need to go up there is for baths. The first couple days we were here, we put the baby gate up in front of the stairs, and after that, we just told them "no" whenever they looked like they were going to go up. Max has only been up once. This was at night during a thunderstorm because he was scared. Maggie has tried to go up many other times...and has been reminded to stay down!

The dog crates. Not gorgeous, but very needed in our house!

One of our housewarming gifts was some much needed shelves and a desk for ME! While Roby was on his mountain bike trip, I put two shelf units together as well as the desk. I love them all and think they fit great in the space!

The first shelf put together. At that point I wasn't sure if I liked it, or liked where it was.

A different angle.

The second shelf put next to it with books completely filling the shelf. I would love to get another of the square units and put it on the other side of the fireplace eventually...but then I would have to find a different place for the globe.

I decided to take the coffee table to the basement for now. There is enough space for it, but the dogs and kids play down there, so it is much more functional to not have it there. The desk is fabulous too! All I had to do to put it together was screw the legs on! (The first one I got had a quarter size dent right in the front, so I exchanged it for one dent free!) I'm loving not having my papers and computer on the kitchen table, and I'm not even in school right now!!!

The first room to be finished!

View from the other side of the room.

Door on the left is the coat closet. Door on the right goes to the basement. At a right angle to the basement door is the garage door. The stairs going up lead to the "main" floor with the front room/kitchen/dining area. (Don't mind Natalie's head board and the vacuum!)

Pretty desk! And dogs playing in the first open space in the house!

A pic of the "ledge" that goes along two sides of the room. The wall goes up about three feet, then in 3-4 inches. Its kind of odd when deciding what to put along those walls, but I'm liking how things are now!

The day I finished the family room, Nikole spent the night! Perfect timing as there is no room in Ethan's room for another kid, and they weren't going to sleep in Nat's room!

Video of the family room. Starting with the garage door, around to the stairs going to the main floor.

The dogs enjoying the open floor!

Dogs and kids playing! (Don't mind the girls kicking the dogs...they got reminding of how that's not ok after I took the video...)

It feels sooooo nice to have a room "done" and clean! I could put a few things on the walls eventually, but I'm not worried about that now. I really like how the furniture pieces work together in the space, and how it feels more like home already!!

One room down, more to go!!!

This room looks AWESOME! Love the video too. I totally understand how this room would work, it has a multipurpose that is totally family oriented. I LOVE IT! I would say just from functionality it is a lot more family friendly than a long room that is part of a dining/kitchen area. Your house ROCKS! So that means theres room for me now, right? ;)
